The Golden Lilies - Twyla Perfumes
Details:
The Golden Lilies
Maia Collection
Twyla Perfumes & Apothecary
Notes:
This scent starts off strong on the Lily-of-the-Valley, tiare and apricot, with a beautiful and golden, earthy base of resinous amber to anchor the sweet, almost candy-like tonka bean. Davana is said to have the unique property of smelling differently on every person's skin. I find it to be rather woodsy, with a hint of herbal-vanilla. The smooth, deep sandalwood and unusual, almost musky floral of the fire tree - which smells a bit like a musky lilac with a hint of apricot, round out this unique and lovely blend.
I know I bang on endlessly about how much I hate fruit scents, but one note that can always reel me in is apricot. In the early 1990s I went through many bottles of a much adored apricot vanilla fragrance oil from my local hippie shop. In the bottle this is all apricot to me, the lily of the valley and tiare comes out wet on skin, and it’s a phenomenal combination – a sweet, lush, tropical scent. The dry down is mostly white floral with a lovely vanilla-ish sweetness from the tonka. As with most Twyla scents, the sillage is quite low and it doesn’t last long – it had more or less disappeared within 3 hours. (On that note, Twyla stated on her Facebook page recently that based on feedback regarding longevity and sillage of her otherwise gorgeous scents, she has strengthened the fragrance, so hopefully that is less of an issue now. For now I’m happy to just frequently slather this one and enjoy it immensely while it’s there.)
Rating:
4/5 It would be a 5 if it lasted longer.
Day 67!
I have been pleasantly surprised by Twylas floral scents, so I think I might like this...
ReplyDeleteTwyla seems to have a knack for making me love things I previously hated - I tried a fruity one of hers the other day (Lirrit) and adored it.
DeleteI can't wait to try this imp! I just don't know if I should do a mega Twyla post or review the imps individually. It's a conundrum ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha, the dilemma of having so many perfumes, so little time. ;-)
DeleteSigh, I wish this one had worked on me, especially since your experience of it sounds so awesome! Maybe it's the apricot, but it just smelled horrible on my skin, I won't even say how bad, but bad 'twas. A few of the other samples I've tried just didn't smell right on me at all, but they seem to be well received by others, so maybe I'm defective :( Some of the new scents sound really intriguing, but I'm wary as the ones I've tried have been more decidedly hit or miss for me than I'm accustomed to really even when the notes sound right up my alley. Occula is still a favorite though!
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame, but perfume oils are so wildly different on people - so many times I've read many rave reviews about something, and then tried it myself and thought, "Ew!". Lucky most indie shops sell samples, eh!
DeleteI have to admit that I was a bit disappointed about that with Twyla's perfumes. Although it could be that I don't want to use them all up!

Yes, I'd like them to last longer - I'm glad she's taken the feedback on board and strengthened them though, because aside from that I really have no complaints about them, they're beautiful.
DeleteUnfortunately,I didn't have much luck with Twyla's scents and the ones I liked they disappear between 5 minutes on my skin! This one reminds me of an italian sweet and bubbly wine I used to drink. If it lasted more it would be a winner.
ReplyDeleteI have some samples coming that are the new stronger blend so I'll be interested to check out longevity on those ones.
DeleteSadly, I have to agree that I can't abide the scents from Twyla. I had the Golden Lilies sample and when I put in on my skin I almost choked (and washed rather quickly). I thought this would be the scent I was dreaming of and then...little drops of poison indeed! My husband has forbidden me to wear any of the samples. I really loved the names she had and her shop style. Like Dee said though, everyone's skin is so different for perfumes.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, isn't that bizarre? I just loved it so much - I couldn't stop sniffing it! I need to be in the same room with someone who hates it and see what the difference is on our skin, haha. :-)
